Ableton Live Mac Os X Snow Leopard

Oct 18, 2015  Hi All, I have a 2010 Imac 27' with 4GB Ram and 1 TB of HD space left. I run Snow Leopard and love it, however Itunes and some other things are not able to upgrade anymore unless I upgrade my OS. My question is, will El Capitan run okay on 4GB of Ram? I don't want a major slow down and love.

I am playing back a project with about 40 tracks. The tracks are on an external hard drive connected by a Firewire 800 connection. My full system stats are shown below. The problem is that while playing back the tracks the system continuously drops tracks and the 'D' indicator lights up indicating Hard Disk overload. Seems like I should be able to playback 40 tracks without a problem.
The system monitor is showing the processor is only at about 10% of capacity (i'm not using any plugins) and the RAM is at only about 50% capacity. So the system is handling the load without a problem.

Ableton

Anybody have any idea why I would be experiencing drop outs?

iMac Intel Dual Core 2.8 GHz
2 GB RAM
Mac OS X Version 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard)
Ableton Live Version 8.1
External Hard drive: Lacie 500 GB (about 250 GB are left on the drive)
Firewire 800 connection from iMac to external hard driveso i just upgraded to snow leopard as it didn't seem that there were too many issues being reported. but now i'm working on this remix that's due tomorrow and it keeps crashing. i've tried each of the plugins that i'm using by themselves and they all seem to work fine. i think i have narrowed it down to the fact that the stems of the song were given to me in .sd2 format, but i can't confirm. can't find any info online either. is it do with .sd2 files having a different native sample rate than the available choices? is that even the case?
